Testimonials

My SMI teacher is the best guitar teacher out there.  He teaches his students with pride and works with you step by step to get to where you want to be guitar playing. (His lessons) are a very big part of my life without him I don't know what I'd do. I suggest SMIl for a great guitar teacher -- rock on!

How long are the lessons?

We offer 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 minute lessons.  Lessons are usually once a week, although some of our students prefer to take longer lessons every other week.  Our most popular lesson time is 45 minutes once a week, which gives time for the instructor to set up any equipment, go over last week’s lesson or assignment, if necessary, and teach new material. Since lessons are designed around each student, your teacher may recommend shorter, longer or multiple lessons within the same week depending on experience, and goals of the student.

How qualified are your teachers?

All of our teachers go through a thorough screening process before we hire them, including background checks, personality tests (to see what type of students they work best with), and multiple interviews. We only hire reliable, patient teachers familiar with many different styles and teaching methods who love music and want to share that with others through education. They are all experienced in both teaching and performing, and bring years of proven skills and tested knowledge to each lesson.

Do you teach beginners?

Yes we teach them and we love them.  We have teachers who specialize in beginner, as well as intermediate and advanced level musicians.  We have programs for children and adults in all styles of music.

How long will it take to learn my instrument?

It varies depending on experience and the amount of time spent practicing.  Most of our beginners take three to six months to feel somewhat accomplished, although you will begin to learn useful skills almost immediately. To make reasonable progress we recommend that students practice four days a week for about 30 minutes a day.

How much does it cost?

Why should I choose at-home lessons instead of going to a local music store?

There are many reasons why in-home lessons are becoming the standard in music education. Here are just a few: In-home instruction is a convenient, comfortable and safe way to learn, especially for younger children who tend to thrive in a more familiar setting. You also save time and money by eliminate the need to drive to and from a store that carries inventory and overhead. To read more about benefits of lessons in the home, click here.

My child is not practicing, is there anything I should do to encourage them?

Yes, kids will be kids, they want immediate satisfaction.  It is normal for your child to show an interest in music and then not want practice their instrument.  As parents you don’t want to force them to do it, but until a child matures they may need the lesson reiterated and reinforced throughout the week by the parents.  A good way to help them is to set up specific times during the week that is only for them to practice. Many parents also find it beneficial to get involved in the child’s practicing time, which can be as simple as sitting in the room they’re practicing in or as involved as going over last week’s lesson.

If I need to cancel, change or reschedule a lesson do I contact my teacher?

No, we ask that our students or parents call us directly for this. This eliminates any confusion for the teacher, and guarantees the SMI office is aware of the change for billing and other purposes. We will notify the instructor of a cancellation and/or new day and time, temporary or otherwise. Please notify us of any change at least 24 hours prior to your regular lesson time to avoid any charges.

Can I quit at any time?

Yes. You are only obligated to pay one month at a time. However, as a courtesy for our teachers, we appreciate a two-week notice.

What teaching method(s) do you use?

There are many good methods for learning music; not every student responds the same to each one.  Knowing this our teachers create a program for each student.  Taking in account the student’s age, experience with music, styles they enjoy most, any goals or wants, and how the student responds to the information being taught, the teacher then tailors a program to help the student learn quickly and efficiently. In general, Sound Music Instruction favors a very practical hands-on approach.  Utilizing the philosophy of the world famous Suzuki method, we strive to get the students playing music as quickly as possible.  We start off with easy-to-do, no-fail steps. As you master these first skills, we build upon them, until you are playing like your favorite musicians.
